Authentic Caprese Salad

An authentic Italian Caprese salad made with ripe tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, extra virgin olive oil & simple seasonings.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes sliced ¼-inch thick
  • 12 oz 340 g fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • 20-25 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ tsp flaky sea salt or to taste
  • ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: 1 tsp aged balsamic vinegar see notes

Method
 

  1. Wash and dry the tomatoes thoroughly.
  2. Slice the tomatoes evenly.
  3. Drain and slice the fresh mozzarella.
  4. Arrange alternating slices of tomato and mozzarella on a serving platter.
  5. Tuck basil leaves between the slices.
  6. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  7. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil.
  8. Add a small amount of aged balsamic vinegar only if desired (not traditional).
  9. Serve immediately at room temperature.

Notes

  • Use tomatoes at room temperature for the best flavor.
  • Fresh mozzarella should not be ice-cold when served.
  • Tear basil leaves instead of chopping them to reduce bruising.
  • High-quality extra virgin olive oil makes a noticeable difference.
  • Traditional Caprese salad does not require balsamic glaze.
